Own a Home in DFW? Don’t Forget Your Homestead Exemption

If you bought a home in Dallas Fort Worth recently, one simple step can lower your property tax bill: filing a homestead exemption. In Texas, it applies to your primary residence, not to investment properties or second homes.

The exemption reduces the taxable value of your home, and many cities and counties offer additional exemptions of their own. Homeowners age 65 or older, and those with certain disabilities, may qualify for extra benefits, so ask your appraisal district.

You file with your county appraisal district, such as Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton, or Ellis, and filing is generally free. Be cautious of companies that charge a fee to file for you. The general deadline is April 30, with some late filing options, so check with your county.

Amounts and rules can change, so confirm current details with your appraisal district or a tax professional. Buying soon? Brando Villatoro with Blue Mountain Realty Group is here at (214) 271-4733.
